Review: Lillias White’s A Woman On Love at The Catalina Jazz Club
Don’t miss the opportunity to see Lillias White. This show is bursting with talent and includes musical director Michael Orland from “American Idol” on grand piano plus guitar, bass, drums, and three very capable male backup singers. Ms. White could easily perform her show at the Hollywood Bowl, but luckily we don’t have to fight the traffic to see her magic in this intimate setting.
Lillias White performs at The Catalina Jazz Club in “A Woman On Love” as part of Upright Cabaret’s American Icon Series…and she is nothing short of an icon. Ms. White is most famously known for her portrayal of Sonja in the musical “The Life” in which she won the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Currently, White is finishing up her run of August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” directed by Phylicia Rashad at the Mark Taper Forum. On her one day free, she is in a nightclub singing her face off.
The Catalina is an upscale supper club in Hollywood. The club itself has plenty of seating so you won’t feel packed in like sardines, but unfortunately the menu leaves something to be desired. As soon as White opens her mouth, everything falls to wayside and you are consumed by her charm and powerhouse vocals. It’s thrilling to experience a legend in the flesh and only 10 feet away from you. What’s even more impressive is that White’s vocal ability is as good as it’s ever been. Don’t expect to hear all the hits from her numerous Broadway shows, but instead you will here some classics, a divine Lena Horne medley, and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” among her varied set list. Honestly, I’m a super fan so I would sit and listen to her sing the phone book.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see Lillias White. This show is bursting with talent and her band includes musical director Michael Orland from “American Idol” on grand piano, Kenny Echezin on guitar, Jonny Morrow on bass, Steven J. Robinson on drums plus three very handsome backup singers including Kojo Littles, Timorris Lane, and Jake Simpson. Truth be told, I’m also now a super fan of Jake Simpson who is known for winning top honors on Star Search in 2003 and 2004. If her band and back up singers weren’t impressive enough, White also welcomes fellow Star Search winner and “The Life” alum Sam Harris as her special guest. Ms. White could easily perform her show at the Hollywood Bowl, but luckily we don’t have to fight the traffic to see her magic in this intimate setting.
